Ja Morant reacts to Devin Booker getting Damian Lillard’s All-Star spot

Memphis Grizzlies standout rookie Ja Morant gave a quick reaction to Devin Booker being named as Damian Lillard’s All-Star replacement. Morant was the one candidate who could have given Booker a run for his money, considering he has helped spark the rebuilding Grizzlies into playoff contention during his first year in the league.

While Morant may be disappointed now, he knows what’s coming in the future:

Despite being 6.5 games over the Phoenix Suns in the West, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver chose to reward Booker, as he was the only name Lillard mentioned in a postgame interview after injuring his groin against the Grizzlies on Wednesday.

Morant can have legitimate beef on not making the All-Star Game, considering his averages of 17.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 7.1 assists are no joke — yet rookies are heavily unlikely to make an All-Star Game.

The last to do so was Blake Griffin in 2010-11 after sitting out a whole season due to a major injury. Before him, it was Yao Ming in 2002-03, getting the massive support of his home country of China fervently voting for him (back when All-Star selections were entirely fan-driven).

Not even LeBron James made the All-Star Game in his rookie season, despite now appearing in 16 of his 17 years in the league. Carmelo Anthony, also a rookie who led his team to the playoffs in his first year, also fell short of contention in 2003.

Most recently, Luka Doncic, who was one of the most exciting draft products in recent memory, also fell short of making the team.

So Morant will indeed have to prepare and wait for his day to come.

Booker will also replace Lillard as a contestant in the 3-Point Contest, looking to become a two-time champion after setting record marks during his trophy-winning year in 2018.
